Earlier this week, Washington/Baltimore HIDTA published their most recent quarterly update on drug trends, analyzing data from Maryland, Virginia, Washington D.C., and West Virginia. Highlights from the report include data analysis from the Washington D.C. Department of Forensic Science Syringe Exchange where during the period of December 2022 through December 2023, 2,808 syringes were reported to have confirmed presence of controlled dangerous substances (CDS). Synthetic opioids were found in 46% of syringes with CDS and the most common opioids detected were fentanyl (in 741 syringes), heroin (in 198 syringes), and phenethyl 4-ANPP (in 118 syringes). Fentanyl comprised 26% of the total number of drugs detected in syringes and was frequently found in syringes containing cocaine, xylazine, and heroin.

Wastewater-based monitoring of the nitazene analogs: First detection of protonitazene in wastewater

screenshot-668

A recently published study, co-authored by NDEWS colleague Dr. Alex Krotulski, detected nitazene analogs in wastewater from samples collected from eight sites in seven states in the US. Samples were collected from each site on three days between December 27, 2022, and January 4, 2023. Protonitazene was found in samples collected from two out of the 24 samples that were analyzed. The results present the first identification of any nitazene in wastewater globally. Read the study here.
