NDEWS Special Report - Corrected: 10 US counties per region with the highest rates of EMS encounters involving suspected nonfatal ketamine overdoses per 10,000 population

The July 17, 2026 NDEWS briefing identified a signal indicating an increase in suspected ketamine overdoses based on biospatial’s data. Since that time, we learned that the biospatial search parameter was not excluding EMS administrations of ketamine as originally intended. As a result, the NDEWS report overestimated the number and rate of suspected ketamine overdose encounters. This error has been corrected, which allowed NDEWS to update the biospatial report using their amended parameter. Although the revised estimates are lower, the updated analysis continues to demonstrate a statistically significant increase in suspected ketamine overdose encounters.

Nationally, 10,783 nonfatal EMS encounters for suspected nonfatal overdoses with ketamine indicated in the record were recorded from January 1, 2023 to June 30, 2026. Of these 3,744 occurred in Western states, 1,723 in Midwestern states, 3,745 in Southern states, and 1,571 in Northeastern states. The national and regional trends as well as top 10 counties per region with highest encounter rate per 10,000 population are presented below.
