The White House releases details of the new, holistic United States-Colombia Counternarcotics Strategy

This week, the White House released details of the new, holistic United Sates-Colombia Counternarcotics Strategy. The strategy focuses on three pillars: drug supply reduction, comprehensive rural security and development, and environmental protection. These broader efforts to address addiction and the overdose crisis put an emphasis on decreasing the availability of illegal substances in the United States and Colombia while also supporting greater security and prosperity in rural areas in Colombia.  2020 NSDUH Annual National Report

This week the results of the 2020 National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) were published. This report summarizes national indicators of substance use and mental health among civilian, noninstitutionalized people 12 years of age or older living in the United States.

De Blasio administration pushes to approve supervised injection sites

The New York City Health Department is pushing to open at least two supervised injection facilities aimed at reducing overdose deaths. The pilot failed to get off the ground since the City Council funded a feasibility study in 2016, but "the mayor has been clear that overdose prevention centers are an idea whose time has come." According to the latest numbers almost 3,000 people across New York died from an overdose in 2018. Read the full article here.


Cannabis adulterated with synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist MDMB-4en-PINACA

Beginning in Spring 2020, several drug monitoring services detected the synthetic cannabinoid receptor agonist MDMB-4en-PINACA in adulterated low-THC cannabis products. 1,142 samples sold as cannabis in herbal, resin, and e-liquid form were analyzed and 270 were found to contain MDMB-4en-PINACA. All cannabis samples contained low THC except the e-liquids which contained no phytocannabinoidsThe authors concluded that since cannabis consumers are not the usual target for drug checking services, harm reduction interventions and services could be reconfigured to include them. Read the full study here.


A narrative synthesis of research with 5-MeO-DMT 

A new study published in Journal of Psychopharmacology described research on 5-MeO-DMT using a narrative synthesis approach. 5-Methoxy-N,N-dimethyltryptamine (5-MeO-DMT) is a naturally occurring, short-acting psychedelic tryptamine, produced by a variety of plant and animal species. It's effect on consciousness and mental health and well-being are detailed here.

Current marijuana use and alcohol consumption among adults following the legalization of nonmedical retail marijuana sales — Colorado, 2015-2019

In this week’s MMWR, a new report using data from Colorado’s Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS) demonstrated that from 2015 to 2019, one third (34.3%) of Colorado adults who reported binge drinking used marijuana which was significantly higher than that among adults who reported non-binge drinking (14.8%) and adults who reported non-drinking (9.9%). The report, which is the first study to assess the relationship between binge drinking and marijuana use among a representative sample of adults in Colorado, found that adults who reported binge drinking were significantly more likely to use other substances than nondrinkers. Several recommendations for the prevention of alcohol-related harms are discussed. Read the full report here.
